The PlayStation 5 recently turned five years old – and what a journey it’s been.
In that time, Sony has not only given us hundreds of games, but also a handful of limited edition PS5s that fans have been chasing after like trophies.
While you can buy interchangeable side panels and custom skins today, there are only a few official custom consoles where the entire design – from the cabinet to the controllers – is uniquely crafted for the moment.
Here we rank all six official limited edition PS5s from worst to best.
6. Monster Hunter Wilds – minimalist to the point of being boring

When Capcom announced the Monster Hunter Wilds edition, everyone expected a PS5 covered in scales, claws, and iconic monsters. Instead, we got… an almost plain, black console with a small logo in the corner.
The design is so anonymous that you almost have to know it’s a special edition to notice it.
It also doesn’t help that this PS5 only launched in Japan, making it both rare and uninspired at the same time.
Worth owning for collectors – but design-wise the weakest link.
5. Final Fantasy XVI – dark elegance, but little imagination

Here again, Sony went for “less is more” – perhaps a little too much less. The Final Fantasy XVI edition is another all-black console, this time with the game’s logo placed in the middle of the front panel.
It looks elegant, but when you consider how spectacular the game’s universe actually is, the design feels safe and underused.
The positives? The logo shimmers nicely in the right light, and the DualSense controller has subtle silver details that add a touch of luxury.
But again: only in Japan.
Nice, but lacks the magic that the game it is supposed to represent.
4. The ghost of Yotei – a lost design potential

As one of the biggest PS5 exclusives of 2025, Ghost of Yotei deserved something special.
Instead, we got a console with… a mountain on the side.
Yes, the mountain is beautiful, and the color palette of silver and blue-gray tones gives a calm expression – but this could have been so much more.
Where did the fog details, the samurai motif or the play of light that could have been reminiscent of a Japanese landscape at sunrise go?
Additionally, the design appears to be made to stand vertically only, making it impractical for many setups.
Beautiful, but far too cautious for such a powerful game.
3. LeBron James Edition – the weirdest coolest PS5

This is the most unexpected special edition on the list.
No games, no movies – just LeBron James.
Sony collaborated with the basketball icon to create a PS5 filled with small details and quotes from LeBron himself, engraved in gold on the black panels.
The design isn’t spectacular, but it feels personal and symbolizes PlayStation’s first true “pop culture” collaboration.
The console was only sold in the US and sold out quickly, making it a collector’s favorite.
Strange? Yes. But it works – just like LeBron himself.
2. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 – symbiotic perfection

This is where the magic begins. The 2023
Spider-Man 2 Edition is perhaps the most iconic PS5 design yet – and for good reason.
The red and black tones blend together as if the symbiote is literally devouring the console, and the design feels directly connected to the game’s story.
This isn’t just a sticker with a logo on it – this is a work of art in motion.
The controller matches perfectly, and the whole package exudes energy, contrast and drama.
A design classic and a must-have for Marvel fans.
1. PlayStation 30th Anniversary – Retroperfection

At the top of the list is the undisputed king of limited editions: the PS5 30th Anniversary Edition.
Here, Sony comes full circle and pays tribute to its own legacy with a design inspired by the original PlayStation 1 from 1994.
The iconic grey tones, the coloured button symbols on the DualSense and the little retro details on the chassis itself make this a console that feels both nostalgic and modern at the same time.
It looks luxurious – but it feels like a love letter to the PlayStation story.
Elegant, nostalgic and impossible not to love. The perfect PS5.
