After a hiatus of over 15 years, renowned designer Jamshid Mousavi (Jem) has revived the JEM Design loudspeakers. His latest creation, the M7s Reference, represents the 42nd design in the series and is an uncompromising reference monitor built on lessons learned from his previous models from 2002 and 2006. This loudspeaker is the result of a five-year development project with one goal in mind: to create the ultimate monitor.
To realize this ambition, Mousavi began with a thorough analysis of common weaknesses in high-end speakers. Problems such as poor driver integration, non-linear frequency response, a narrow “sweet spot” and limited dynamics were systematically identified and addressed. The solution? A multi-stage design with low compression that not only ensures an accurate and powerful bass range down to 35 Hz, but also preserves the integrity of the soundstage even at high volumes.
The M7s Reference is built with uncompromising materials. The cabinet is made of solid, thick-walled walnut wood and the speaker is equipped with some of the best drivers on the market:
- SEAS Excel 18 cm magnesium woofer – known for its precision and natural reproduction.
- Accuton 25 mm sapphire-glazed ceramic tweeter – extremely fast and detailed, without the harshness that often characterizes high-resolution tweeters.
To eliminate unwanted resonances, Mousavi has developed Residual Anomaly Suppression (RAS), a special technology that ensures a silky smooth and natural sound. The crossover uses high-quality paper-in-oil capacitors and copper foil coils, which contributes to an organic and musical flow.
Each speaker is hand-built in JEM Design’s own workshop, where the production process takes a full 14 months. This includes precision work on the cabinet, custom tuning and extensive listening tests with a wide range of music – from classical to heavy metal.
One of the biggest challenges has been to achieve a completely neutral frequency response without compromising musical engagement. The result is a speaker with a large sweet spot and perfect driver integration. It is also designed to be placed relatively close to the rear wall, making it flexible in use.
